Imported items cost much more in Africa than in the US/Europe and Australia. Sometimes, items cost up to double the cost outside Africa. The business and delivery network is less efficient in Africa, with less competition. Over the years, grain prices have risen sharply in Africa, hitting the poor especially hard since they must spend a large portion of their incomes on staple foods. Surging fuel costs for transport, limited supplies, and increased demand have resulted in consistently higher prices.
