Fatu lives in Freetown with her aunt. Her family lives in the Kamawornie village of Karena District in northern Sierra Leone with her parents, two brothers, and sister. Fatu's father is a poor farmer, and her mother is a housewife.  Fatu loves to read, and her favorite subject in school is English. Fatu's dream is to become a lawyer to assist the residents of her community.
